In 1588, battered by weather and war, a ship of the
defeated Spanish Armada comes to grief on the rocks of
remote Fair Isle. Freya, a young island widow must help
her impoverished peasant community to cope with the
invasion of more than two hundred desperate foreign soldiers and
sailors. One of the castaways is Cristobal, a fugitive,
tormented by a guilty secret, who finds solace in Freya's
care. Amidst the privations of this hostile environment, a
tender love grows between them.
But as starvation threatens, the precarious relations
between inhabitants and invaders are rocked by suspicion
and fear. Violence simmers and murder imperils the lives
of all on the island.
The stark beauty of the island is a stunning backdrop to
this imagined love story inspired by real events.
